Preparing for Camp
Getting ready for your RYLA experience.
You’re about to take part in a week that’s full of learning, teamwork, and fun. Here’s how to prepare so you can make the most of it.
Where You’ll Be
RYLA is held on the campus of the University of Minnesota Crookston, and campers stay in the college residence halls for the week.
You’ll have access to indoor facilities like classrooms, lounges, and a dining hall, while also participating in some outdoor activities across campus.
So pack for comfort, movement, and a little bit of everything — from air-conditioned classrooms to sunny walks across campus.
What to Bring
A full packing list can be found below, but here’s the gist:
- Comfortable clothes for both warm days and cool evenings
- Closed-toe shoes for outdoor activities
- Toiletries and personal items
- Bedding or sleeping bag
- Notebook, pen, and an open mind
- A copy of Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens if you have one (and maybe read it beforehand too!)
What Not to Bring
Please leave the following at home:
- Expensive clothing, jewelry, or valuables
- Weapons, drugs, alcohol, or vape products
- Anything that might distract from your experience
Getting to Camp
Many Rotary Clubs coordinate transportation for their sponsored students. Your club liaison will share the travel plan, including departure and pickup times, as camp approaches.
If you have questions about transportation or special travel needs, reach out to your club or the RYLA team — we’re happy to help.
Staying in Touch
Campers are allowed to bring phones, but we encourage limited use during the day to stay engaged in the program.
You’ll have time during breaks or in the evenings to check in with family, take photos, and relax — but we ask that devices not be used during group sessions or activities.
Please leave laptops, gaming devices, and other electronics at home.
What Happens When You Arrive
When you check in, you’ll meet your staff team and get your room assignment. Within the first few hours you’ll join your small group for the week. From there, you’ll jump right into activities that help you get to know each other and start building trust.
A Note from the RYLA Team
Campers often tell us they were nervous before arriving — that’s completely normal. By the end of the week, those same students are laughing with their new friends and amazed by how much they’ve learned about themselves.
You don’t need to know anyone or have leadership experience to attend RYLA — just come with curiosity and an open mind. Here are a few ways to prepare:
- Be ready to meet new people and try new things
- Expect full days — your schedule will be busy, but fun
- Take care of yourself — sleep, hydrate, and be kind to yourself
- Reflect on what kind of leader you want to be
Come as you are. We can’t wait to meet you.
