Dear Rotary Youth Leadership Award Participants (RYLARIANS):

Congratulations on receiving a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp Scholarship! You have been selected by your community Rotary Club in District 5580 for your outstanding leadership potential. It is quite an honor to represent your community and Rotary Club with approximately 150 other students from Canada, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Arrival

The twenty-sixth annual Camp RYLA will begin at the University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC), on Sunday, July 9, 2017. Registration is scheduled for Sunday, July 9 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm in the Evergreen Residence Hall (2900 University Ave, Crookston, MN 56716). A light lunch will be provided at check-in.

The Camp will officially start at 1:15 p.m. with a Welcome Ceremony and an action packed, fun-filled week to follow. Camp RYLA will end Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. (Please inform whomever will pick you up on Saturday that the camp ends at 11:00 a.m.).

Prepare

The three items listed below need to be completed or accounted for prior to arriving to Camp:

  1. We participate in a service project with the local food bank during camp. We ask that you read Volunteer Guidelines. You and your parent/guardian must also sign the Volunteer Agreement mailed to you. Please bring the signed Volunteer Agreement with you to camp.
  1. Prior to coming to camp you complete a short online questionnaire. MMTIC is a tool we’ll explore and use during the week. It will take about 5-10 minutes to complete and needs to be done in one sitting. We recommend you complete the questionnaire in a setting that you feel comfortable in with minimal distractions. There are no wrong answers.

  1. You will be required to pay a $40.00 CASH deposit for your room key. Please bring the EXACT AMOUNT, as we will not be able to make change. We will refund the full deposit when you return the key at the conclusion of the camp. If you drive your own vehicle to the camp, staff will collect your keys when you arrive and return them to you at the end of the camp.

Packing

Campers will spend the week in one of the UMC residence halls with 2-4 other campers. Bedding will be provided by UMC Residential Life (sheets, one pillow and case, and a light blanket). If you would like an extra pillow, blanket, or comforter, you may want to bring those items with you. All rooms are air-conditioned.

You should bring one formal outfit for the fine dining experience on Thursday, July 13. No need to go out and buy a new formal dress or suit. If you play a musical instrument you can carry, we encourage you to bring it, as we have a skit night and talent show during the week. We have pianos on campus for your use during the camp.

We want you to get the most out of your RYLA experience; therefore, please plan to limit cell phone use to scheduled breaks/free time and refrain from using cell phones during all camp sessions.
